Lab Assistant Resume Examples & Format

A lab assistant supports the scientists, technicians or students who run experiments and tests: preparing solutions and samples, cleaning and sterilizing glassware, restocking supplies, logging specimens and results, keeping equipment calibrated and following safety rules. A lab assistant resume should prove skills such as solution, buffer and media preparation, pipetting and measuring, and sterilization and autoclave use with numbers from your own work. Below are three samples, entry-level to senior, with summaries, bullets and skills.

What does a lab assistant do?

The setting changes the tasks. In a school or university lab the job is mostly set-up, clean-up and helping students; in a hospital or clinic it is specimen handling and record keeping; in a research or industrial lab it is sample prep and data entry. A lab assistant resume should name the type of lab, the techniques and equipment you have used, and the accuracy and volume you handled.

Lab Assistant duties to put on a resume

  • Prepare solutions, media, reagents, samples and equipment for experiments and tests.
  • Clean, sterilize and put away glassware and instruments, and keep benches and fume hoods in order.
  • Receive, label, store and log samples and specimens, and keep the records accurate.
  • Follow chemical hygiene, bloodborne pathogen and waste disposal rules.
  • Check inventory, place supply orders and restock the lab.
  • Run routine equipment checks and report faults to the lab manager.

Lab Assistant resume format and template

  • Keep it to one page and name the type of lab in the first line: teaching, clinical, research or industrial.
  • Give volume and accuracy: samples a shift, sections prepared, error rate, inventory counts or supply budget.
  • Group techniques and equipment in a short skills line, and keep safety training in its own line so it is easy to find.

The section order and what goes in each are on the how to write a resume guide; the resume format guide covers every format by type and country.

  • Cut weekly supply shortages by 50% with a par-level sheet and a Monday restock.
  • Reduced contamination events from 6 to 2 a year by revising the sterile-technique checklist.
  • Delivered stat samples to the right bench within 10 minutes of receipt.
  • Trained 9 new staff and students on sterile technique and bench set-up.

Soft skills: Attention to detail, Following protocols exactly, Reliability on early shifts, Asking before guessing, Working with scientists and students.

Education and certifications

  • Lab assistant jobs are entry-level support roles, and the nearest government occupations, biological technicians and clinical laboratory technicians, typically ask for a degree at the bachelor's or associate level (BLS). If you are still studying, list the degree, your expected year and relevant lab courses.
  • Lab safety training matters on this resume: name the course, such as chemical hygiene or bloodborne pathogens, with the year. The OSHA laboratory standard covers the chemical hygiene plan a lab must keep (OSHA).
  • List techniques as skills only when you have done them, such as pipetting, aseptic technique or autoclave use, and say whether it was in a teaching, hospital or research lab.

FAQ

Lab Assistant resume questions, answered.

Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.

What should a lab assistant with no experience put on a resume?

Lead with school lab courses and name the techniques you practiced, such as pipetting, solution prep or microscope use. Add any lab safety training, a work-study or volunteer job with careful record keeping, and the GPA of your science courses if it is 3.0 or higher.

Should I list lab techniques as skills?

Only the ones you can perform without help, and group them by type, such as sample prep, sterilization and record keeping. Tie each one to the setting where you used it. A technique with a number, like 300 samples logged, is stronger than a bare list.

What is the difference between a lab assistant and a lab technician?

Assistants mostly prepare supplies, clean equipment and log samples, and technicians run tests and analyze results, usually with more education. Use the title you held, and if you did technician-level tasks, name them with the equipment and the number of samples.
