Dental Assistant Resume Examples & Template
A dental assistant helps the dentist during treatment, and a good dental assistant resume template shows it: preparing patients and the work area, sterilizing instruments, handing instruments, keeping the patient's mouth dry with suction, keeping treatment records and booking appointments. A dental assistant resume should prove skills such as chairside assisting, instrument sterilization and infection control with numbers from your own work. Below are three samples, entry-level to senior, with summaries, bullets and skills.

What does a dental assistant do?
BLS reports that almost all dental assistants work in dentists' offices, mostly full time, with some evening or weekend shifts. An entry level dental assistant resume leads with the program and externship hours, any radiography or infection-control training, and a line on patient comfort, then adds the practice software you used.
Dental Assistant duties to put on a resume
- Make patients comfortable in the dental chair and prepare patients and the work area for treatment.
- Sterilize dental instruments and hand them to the dentist during procedures.
- Dry patients' mouths using suction hoses and other equipment.
- Process x rays and complete lab tasks under the direction of a dentist, where your state allows it.
- Instruct patients in proper oral hygiene.
- Keep records of dental treatments.
- Schedule patient appointments.
Best resume format for a dental assistant
- Use a simple one-page template with clear headings; dental offices read resumes quickly.
- Show patients a day, procedures assisted, radiographs taken and your infection-control record.
- Put your credentials, CPR and any state registration under a separate heading, and your shift availability near the top.
The section order and what goes in each are on the how to write a resume guide; the resume format guide covers every format by type and country.

Education and certifications
- BLS says some states require dental assistants to graduate from an accredited program and pass an exam; most programs take about a year and lead to a certificate or diploma. Check your state's dental board.
- BLS says dental assistants without formal education may learn their duties through on-the-job training; if that is you, describe the training and the procedures you learned.
- BLS says states typically do not require licenses for entry-level dental assistants, but some require licensing, registration or certification for tasks such as radiography. List a credential only if you hold it, with the issuer and year. The national certification is DANB's Certified Dental Assistant (CDA), made up of three exams: infection control, radiation health and safety, and general chairside assisting.

Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.
How do I write a beginner dental assistant resume?
Lead with your dental assisting program and clinical externship hours, the procedures you assisted on, infection control and CPR, then your customer-service or volunteer experience. Say you are eager to train on the job; many offices teach their own procedures.
What are the best dental assistant resume skills?
Chairside assisting, instrument sterilization, infection control, dental software, scheduling and patient education, plus soft skills such as patient comfort and teamwork. Add radiography only if you are allowed to take x rays in your state.
Is there a resume template for a dental assistant I can use?
Yes. Use a one-page template with a summary, clinical experience, education and credentials, and skills. Keep fonts plain, put numbers beside each task and save it as a PDF unless the employer asks for another format.
Do dental assistants need a license?
It depends on your state. BLS says states typically do not require licenses for entry-level dental assistants, but some require licensing, registration or certification for tasks such as radiography. Check your state dental board and the job posting before listing credentials.
