What does a dentist do?
They examine patients, take and read X-rays, remove decay and fill cavities, repair or remove damaged teeth, place crowns, and teach patients about diet, flossing and fluoride, referring complex cases to specialists. The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that dentists typically need a DDS or DMD degree from an accredited dental program and must be licensed in the state where they work.
Best resume format for a dentist
- Put DDS or DMD after your name and your state license where a practice owner sees it first.
- Show procedure volumes and success rates rather than general statements.
- List the equipment and software you handle: rotary endo, intraoral scanner, digital X-ray, CAD/CAM, Dentrix or Eaglesoft.
The section order and what goes in each are on the how to write a resume guide; the resume format guide covers every format by type and country.

How do I write a resume as a new graduate dentist?
Lead with your DDS or DMD, your state license (or the exam date if pending) and any residency, then list the cases you completed in school or residency: fillings, root canals, extractions and cleanings with counts. Add BLS and the practice software you have used.
Should I put my license number on my resume?
Name the state board and the year licensed, and give the number when the practice asks for verification. Many states let employers look up a license online, so the board name and your full legal name are usually enough at the resume stage.
Is a CV for a dentist in the UK different?
Yes. UK practices ask for a CV, not a resume: up to two pages with your General Dental Council (GDC) registration number near the top, then your foundation training, procedures and volumes, with no photo or date of birth. A dentist CV still needs counts, such as patients a day and root canals completed.
Do I need a specialty to get a good dentist job?
Not for general practice, which most dentists work in. Specialist, consultant and teaching roles usually ask for a residency or specialty program, such as endodontics or prosthodontics, so list that training with the program and year if you hold it.
