Technician Resume Examples & Format

A technician installs, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs equipment: production machinery in a plant, HVAC and building systems, field service equipment at customer sites, or electronics on a bench. A technician resume should prove skills such as preventive maintenance, electrical troubleshooting and multimeters, and PLCs and motor controls with numbers from your own work. Below are three samples, entry-level to senior, with summaries, bullets and skills.

What does a technician do?

BLS describes industrial machinery mechanics and maintenance workers as people who "install, maintain, and repair factory equipment and other industrial machinery", diagnosing problems, taking machines apart, replacing parts and calibrating them to specification. Most technicians learn through a technical program or on-the-job training, and many hold an industry certificate. A technician resume should name the equipment and systems you work on, your diagnostic tools, and numbers for uptime, response time, repairs completed and safety.

Technician duties to put on a resume

  • Install, inspect and maintain equipment on a preventive maintenance schedule.
  • Diagnose faults using meters, gauges, schematics and diagnostic software.
  • Repair or replace parts and calibrate equipment to specification.
  • Record work, parts and time in the CMMS or service system.
  • Follow lockout/tagout and other safety procedures.
  • Explain repairs to operators or customers and recommend fixes.

Best resume format for a technician

  • Put the type of technician you are in the headline: maintenance, field service, HVAC, electronics.
  • Name the equipment, brands and control systems you work on.
  • Show uptime, repair time, first-time fix and call volume.

The section order and what goes in each are on the how to write a resume guide; the resume format guide covers every format by type and country.

FAQ

Technician resume questions, answered.

Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.

How do I write a resume for field service technician jobs?

Lead with call volume, first-time fix rate, response time and customer feedback, then the equipment brands and systems you service. Mention your territory, on-call duty and driving record if the job includes a company vehicle. Keep each job to three or four lines with numbers.

Which skills should a technician list?

Electrical troubleshooting, PLCs and motor controls, hydraulics and pneumatics, preventive maintenance, schematics, CMMS use and lockout/tagout, plus whatever your field needs, such as refrigeration. Pair each with proof in a bullet, like repair time cut from 48 to 22 minutes.

Do technicians need a degree?

Usually not. BLS says industrial machinery mechanics and maintenance workers typically need a high school diploma and a year or more of on-the-job training. A technical college certificate or associate degree helps, and some work, such as refrigerant handling, requires a specific certificate.

How do I apply for technician jobs with no experience?

Lead with your technical program: labs, equipment you trained on, an internship or co-op, and certificates. Add any hands-on work such as auto repair, parts counters or building projects. Write it like a job, with what you fixed and how many.

How do technician resumes differ by trade?

The trade changes the credentials and tools. An HVAC technician resume lists EPA 608 and manufacturer training; a service technician resume shows calls a day and first-visit fix rate; an automotive technician resume lists ASE certifications and shop systems. Medical technicians, such as sterile processing or ultrasound, lead with their program and certification.
