What does an automotive technician do?

O*NET describes automotive service technicians and mechanics as people who diagnose, adjust, repair or overhaul vehicles; their tasks include following inspection checklists for belts, hoses, brakes, steering and fuel systems, doing scheduled maintenance such as oil changes and tune-ups, repairing brakes and aligning wheels, then testing repaired systems against the maker's specifications. In the US they work at dealerships, independent shops, tire and quick-lube chains and fleet garages, so an automotive technician resume should show certifications, the makes you work on and how many repair orders you close.

  • Perform scheduled maintenance such as oil changes, lubrication and tune-ups.
  • Inspect vehicles for damage and record findings on the repair order.
  • Repair, replace and adjust brakes, and align wheels and front ends.
  • Test and adjust repaired systems to meet the manufacturer's specifications.
