What does a mechanic do?

Mechanic resume examples should show the systems you repair, the tools you use and the volume of work you finish. Daily work covers finding problems with diagnostic equipment, doing maintenance such as oil changes, and replacing worn parts. In the US the largest share of automotive technicians work for automobile dealers, mostly full time, with evening or weekend work sometimes required.

Mechanic duties to put on a resume

  • Inspect, maintain and repair cars and light trucks.
  • Identify problems using diagnostic equipment and test drives.
  • Perform routine and scheduled maintenance, such as oil changes, lubrication and tune-ups.
  • Repair, replace and adjust brakes, steering, suspension and other worn parts.
  • Repair and service air conditioning, heating, engine cooling and electrical systems.
  • Confer with customers about vehicle problems and repair work, and estimate repair costs.
  • Test and adjust repaired systems to meet manufacturers' specifications.
  • Follow safety procedures and environmental regulations, and keep the work area clean.

Best resume format for a mechanic

  • Put your certifications near the top, since shops look for them first.
  • Show volume and quality: repair orders a day, comeback rate, vehicles serviced, downtime cut.
  • List the makes, systems and tools you work with, and say whether you own your hand tools.

The section order and what goes in each are on the how to write a resume guide; the resume format guide covers every format by type and country.

Where can I find mechanic resume examples for different levels?

The three mechanic resume examples above cover an entry-level graduate, a technician with four years at a dealership and a lead technician. Copy the structure, not the words, and replace each number with your own.

What mechanic skills should I list on a resume?

Mechanic skills worth listing include engine diagnostics with scan tools, brake service, suspension and steering, wheel alignment, air conditioning service, electrical systems and repair estimates. Add soft skills such as problem-solving, and show each skill in a bullet with a number.

Do mechanics need certification?

BLS says the EPA requires certification for handling refrigerants, and employers may require or prefer ASE certification. Check the job posting, and list a certification only if you hold it, with the area and year.

Should a diesel mechanic resume and an aircraft mechanic resume differ?

Yes, in credentials and equipment. A diesel mechanic resume lists ASE or manufacturer training, engine and drivetrain work, and the fleet or equipment types. An aircraft mechanic resume leads with the FAA A&P certificate, aircraft types, 100-hour inspections and repairs signed off, and the maintenance system. Show jobs a week; diesel adds comeback rate.
