A speech-language pathologist (SLP) assesses and treats speech, language, voice, fluency, cognitive-communication and swallowing disorders in children and adults, and an SLP resume should lead with your degree, your state license and your ASHA certification. An SLP resume should prove skills such as speech and language evaluation, dysphagia assessment and treatment, and articulation and phonology therapy with numbers from your own work. What does an SLP do?

SLPs work in schools, hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, outpatient clinics, early intervention programs and private practice, and many also provide telepractice. Practice usually requires a master's degree from an accredited program and a state license, and many SLPs hold the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), which also requires a supervised clinical fellowship and an exam (BLS). A speech language pathologist resume that names the setting, caseload and measurable client progress reads far stronger than a list of therapy techniques.

SLP duties to put on a resume

  • Evaluate speech, language, voice, fluency, cognitive-communication and swallowing, and write the reports.
  • Plan and deliver treatment, individually and in small groups, with measurable goals.
  • Write and review individualized education programs (IEPs) or plans of care, and attend team meetings.
  • Teach families, teachers and caregivers strategies to use between sessions.
  • Document each visit, track progress data and complete progress and discharge reports.

Best resume format for an SLP

  • Put CCC-SLP, your state license and your setting in the first two lines under your name.
  • State your caseload size, evaluations a week or groups run for every job.
  • A speech language pathology resume for a clinical fellowship lists graduate practicum hours by setting, because they show the range of disorders and ages you have treated.
  • Name the settings and populations you serve: pediatric, adult, school, medical, telepractice, bilingual.

The section order and what goes in each are on the how to write a resume guide; the resume format guide covers every format by type and country.

  • The ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology is written CCC-SLP. To earn it you graduate from an accredited program, pass an exam and complete a supervised clinical fellowship (BLS). Write the credential with the year, and write "in progress" if you are still in the fellowship.

FAQ

SLP resume questions, answered.

Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.

How do I list a clinical fellowship on an SLP resume?

Give it its own entry like a job: title Clinical Fellow SLP, the setting, the dates, caseload size and what you did, with your supervisor's CCC-SLP status. Write ASHA CCC-SLP as in progress until ASHA has awarded the certificate.

What is the difference between a school SLP resume and a medical SLP resume?

A school resume stresses caseload, IEP meetings, groups, teacher collaboration and any education credential. A medical resume stresses evaluations a week, swallow studies, diagnoses seen and the units where you worked, such as acute care or rehabilitation.

Should an SLP list graduate practicum hours?

Yes, if you are a new graduate or a clinical fellow. Give hours by setting and age group, since they show the range of clients you have treated. Experienced SLPs can drop them and let job results carry the page.
