CVEmber

Resume format for experienced professionals in India

With a few years behind you, an Indian resume becomes two pages at most: a three-line professional summary, your jobs with achievements you can count, skills, and education at the end. Put your notice period near the top; leave CTC for the form.

Achievements, not duties

“Responsible for sales in Jaipur” tells a recruiter nothing. “Grew Jaipur territory sales 34% in FY 2022-23 by adding 600 outlets” tells them what you'll do for them. For each job, write two to four bullets with a number: revenue, cost, time, customers, team size or rank.

Switching jobs: notice period and buyouts

Employers usually ask how soon you can join. State your notice period, whether it's negotiable, and your last working day if you've already resigned. When you do resign, our resignation letter for India covers the notice period, relieving letter and full-and-final settlement.

Senior and leadership roles

Open with the scope you've held (P&L, team size, regions), then three results. Two pages is enough for most senior hires too; details can go in your LinkedIn profile.

Changing career or industry

Use a hybrid layout: a skills section first that maps what you've done to the new role, then your experience in reverse-chronological order. Tailor it to each job ad; CVEmber's tailoring shows every change for your approval.

What Indian recruiters look for, by industry

  • IT and software: the stack you've shipped with, the scale (users, transactions, uptime), and certifications (AWS, Azure, Scrum). Link GitHub or a portfolio for developers.
  • Sales and business development: targets against achievement, territory, revenue and ranking among peers.
  • Finance and accounts: compliance you own (GST, TDS, audits), systems (Tally, SAP FICO) and the size of the books.
  • Operations and manufacturing: output, quality and cost numbers, safety records, plant or line size.
  • BPO and customer service: process handled (voice, non-voice, domestic, international), AHT, CSAT and quality scores.
  • Teaching: classes and subjects, board (CBSE, ICSE, state), results, and qualifications such as B.Ed or CTET.

Keep LinkedIn and Naukri in line with your resume

Recruiters check your profiles against your resume. Use the same job titles and dates everywhere, keep your Naukri headline and key skills current, and put the detail that doesn't fit on two pages into LinkedIn.

Mistakes experienced candidates make

  • Keeping every job from 15 years ago in full detail.
  • The same resume for every application. Match the advert's words.
  • A creative two-column template for a company portal that reads it out of order.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

How long should an experienced resume be in India?

Two pages is enough for most roles, including many senior ones. Under five years of experience, one page is usually enough.

Should I mention my notice period on my resume?

Yes, one line near the top. Recruiters usually ask, and it saves a call.

Should I include my current CTC?

No. Share current and expected CTC on the application form or when HR asks.

How do I explain a career gap?

One honest line with the dates and what you did: family care, study, a certification or freelance work. Recruiters accept gaps that are explained.

Should experienced people keep Class X and XII marks?

Usually not. After a degree and a few years' work, list your degree and professional certifications; keep school marks only if an employer asks.
