What the official job profile lists for a data engineer
O*NET, the US Labor Department's job database, has no occupation called data engineer. The closest profile is data warehousing specialists, who design, model and build company data warehouses. Its tasks read like a data engineer's week: build process models for sourcing, extracting, transforming and loading data; map data between source systems, warehouses and data marts; design and implement warehouse structures; check the structure, accuracy and quality of the data; write unit and integration test scripts; and troubleshoot the system. The skills it ranks highest include critical thinking, reading comprehension, writing, active learning and mathematics. Its technology list names databases such as Oracle, SQL Server and PostgreSQL, AWS, BI tools such as Tableau and Power BI, and Python, Java and SQL.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics covers the nearest work under database administrators and architects. It says architects research an organisation's needs and create models for building the database, and it calls an understanding of SQL and relevant programming languages essential. Its important qualities are analytical skills, communication, attention to detail and problem-solving, because small errors in complex systems cause large problems. Streaming, orchestration and the newer cloud tools above go beyond both official profiles.
The example bullets below are illustrative: every figure is made up. Use your own numbers.
Core skills for a data engineer resume
- SQL (advanced): BLS calls an understanding of SQL essential for database work, and SQL is in O*NET's technology list for warehousing specialists. Show tuning: a runtime you cut or a query you rewrote, with before and after. Example: Wrote 25 SQL transformations and cut a daily report job from 40 minutes to 12.
- Python: Python is common glue for extract and load scripts, and O*NET lists it among the languages for this work. Say what your code replaced or automated, and how many jobs or hours it covered. Example: Moved 3 legacy SSIS jobs to Python, removing 10 hours a week of manual work.
- Data modelling (star schema): O*NET lists designing and implementing warehouse database structures, and BLS says architects create models for building the database. Give the fact and dimension count and who queries the model. Example: Modelled a 6-fact, 14-dimension retail warehouse used by 40 analysts.
- Data quality and testing: Verifying the structure, accuracy and quality of warehouse data is an O*NET task, as is writing unit and integration test scripts. A drop in failed loads or broken reports is the measure to give. Example: Added tests to every critical table, cutting failed reports by 70%.
Processing and orchestration skills for a data engineer resume
- Apache Spark / PySpark: Spark handles data too large for one machine. Interviewers probe partitioning and shuffles, so state the volume per run and the cluster or service you ran it on. Example: Built 15 Spark jobs on EMR processing 300 GB a night.
- Airflow: Scheduling jobs in the right order, with retries and alerts, is daily work. Report how many pipelines you own, the daily volume and the on-time rate, since reliability is what the business notices. Example: Own 60 Airflow DAGs loading 1.5 TB a day with a 99.5% on-time rate.
- Kafka: Streaming moves events as they happen instead of in nightly batches. Give the event rate and where the stream lands; if streaming was a small part of your work, say so plainly. Example: Streamed 10,000 events a minute from Kafka into Spark Streaming.
- dbt: dbt keeps SQL transformations in version control with tests attached. Incremental models that shorten a nightly run make a strong line, because compute time is a cost the team pays for. Example: Moved 20 heavy joins into incremental dbt models, cutting nightly runtime from 4 hours to 1.8.
Cloud skills for a data engineer resume
- Snowflake / BigQuery / Redshift: Cloud warehouses charge for compute, so cost control is part of the job. Name the warehouse and the saving or runtime change you made, in the currency the employer uses. Example: Tuned Snowflake warehouse sizes and schedules, saving ₹18 lakh a year.
- AWS (S3, Glue, EMR): AWS is on O*NET's technology list for data warehousing specialists. Name the services you used and the size of the lake or the number of jobs, not just "AWS experience". Example: Ran 15 EMR jobs and 8 Glue crawlers over a 40 TB S3 data lake.
- Azure (Data Factory, Synapse): Azure teams look for Data Factory pipelines and Synapse or Azure SQL loads. Give the daily row count and the checks you built in, since loads without checks are where bad data slips through. Example: Loaded 2 million rows a day into Azure SQL with Data Factory and quality checks.
- Databricks and Delta Lake: Delta tables add versions and rollback to files in a lake. Say what that made possible, such as audits or recovering from a bad load, rather than listing the product name alone. Example: Rebuilt 4 tables as Delta, enabling time travel for 30-day audits.
- Docker and Git: Containers and code review make pipelines repeatable and safe to change. Show that your work went through review and ran the same way in every environment. Example: Containerised 6 pipeline services with Docker and ran all changes through Git reviews.
Which data engineer skills to lead with, by experience
Entry level: Lead with SQL and Python, then one end-to-end pipeline you built: source, transformation, load, tests and schedule. One cloud and one orchestrator are enough if you can explain every step. A junior hire is judged on clean, tested code and on knowing why a load failed, so add the data volume and the checks you wrote, even on a personal project.
Experienced: Lead with the systems you own and their numbers: pipelines, daily volume, on-time rate, failure rate and cost. Then show design work: warehouse models, migrations from older tools, test frameworks. Senior engineers also set standards and review others' code, and O*NET's task of mapping data across source systems and marts is the cross-team design work that leads to lead or architect roles.
Certifications for a data engineer resume
- Microsoft DP-203 (Azure Data Engineer Associate).
- AWS Certified Data Engineer – Associate, or Google Professional Data Engineer.
- Databricks Certified Data Engineer Associate; SnowPro Core.
What to leave off a data engineer resume
- Every cloud service you have clicked on. A long AWS and Azure list invites questions on each; keep the services that ran your pipelines.
- Volumes without a time unit. "1.5 TB" means little; "1.5 TB a day" tells the reader the size of the job.
- Model training you only watched. That belongs to a data scientist's resume; your part was the data that fed the model, so write that.
- Old tools with no context. If SSIS or cron scripts are in your history, show them as what you migrated away from.

FAQ
Data Engineer skills questions, answered.
Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.
What skills should a data engineer put on a resume?
Advanced SQL and Python first, then Spark, an orchestrator such as Airflow or Data Factory, a cloud warehouse, one cloud platform, data modelling, dbt, data quality testing, Docker and Git. O*NET's nearest profile lists building load processes, warehouse design and test scripts as core tasks, so show those with volumes and runtimes.
What skills do data engineering freshers need?
SQL, Python, Spark basics, one cloud (AWS or Azure), one orchestrator and one pipeline project that runs from source to a finished table. Write the volume, the schedule and the checks you added. A public repository lets a hiring engineer read your code instead of a list of tools.
What is the most important data engineer skill?
Advanced SQL, followed by building pipelines that run reliably at scale with tests and monitoring. BLS calls an understanding of SQL essential for database work, and O*NET's warehousing profile puts data quality checks and test scripts among its core tasks. Reliability numbers prove both.
What skills does an Azure data engineer need?
Data Factory for pipelines, Synapse or Databricks for processing, ADLS for storage, plus SQL and PySpark. Show a daily load, a runtime and the checks you built, since Azure adverts usually name the exact services they run. Add a current Microsoft certification if you hold one, with the year.
Do data engineers need a degree?
Most do. O*NET reports that most data warehousing specialists need a bachelor's degree and several years of related experience. BLS says database administrators and architects typically need a bachelor's degree in computer and information technology or a related field, and that certification is offered by software vendors and vendor-neutral providers.
What skills does a cloud data engineer need?
One cloud platform in depth: its storage, a managed Spark or warehouse service and its orchestration tool, on top of SQL and Python. Add infrastructure basics such as Terraform if you have used them, and name each service in a bullet with the data volume it handled.
