What the official job profile lists for a marketing manager
O*NET describes marketing managers through tasks that go well beyond running campaigns: planning and directing marketing activity, using sales forecasts and strategic planning to keep products profitable, building strategy from market and cost data, evaluating budgets and return on investment, setting prices, starting market research, and hiring and training marketing staff. The skills it ranks highest are active listening, speaking, active learning and critical thinking. Sales and marketing is its first knowledge area, and Google Analytics, HubSpot, Salesforce, Tableau and Marketo are among the tools it flags.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics says marketing managers estimate demand, find new markets, set pricing and decide how to win customers, working with product, public relations and sales teams. The qualities it lists are analytical, communication, creative, decision-making, interpersonal and organisational skills. A strong marketing resume shows those skills through numbers the business cares about.
The example bullets below are illustrative: every figure is made up. Use your own numbers.
Strategy skills for a marketing manager resume
- Campaign planning and budgeting: O*NET lists evaluating budgets, spending and return on investment among a marketing manager's tasks. State the budget you own, the channels it covers and what it returned. Example: Own a ₹1.2 crore annual budget across paid, email and influencer.
- Brand positioning: Positioning decides which customer need a product answers. Show one change you led and the customer behaviour that moved after it, such as repeat purchase. Example: Repositioned 1 product line around 1 customer need, lifting repeat rate from 18% to 26%.
- Market research: O*NET lists starting market research studies and analysing their findings. Give the sample size and the decision the research led to, because research that changed nothing is hard to sell. Example: Surveyed 220 customers and found the demand for a resealable pouch.
- Working with sales: BLS describes marketing managers working with sales and product teams to grow profit and market share. Shared targets measured on revenue show the two teams pulled together. Example: Agreed quarterly lead targets with sales, measured on revenue for 8 quarters.
Channels skills for a marketing manager resume
- Google Ads: Paid search is judged on cost and conversion. Name the account size or spend if you can, and the metric you improved, such as cost per lead or return on ad spend. Example: Rebuilt campaigns around product margins, cutting cost per lead by 34%.
- Meta Ads Manager: Paid social runs on audience, creative and testing. Give the campaign length and the outcomes that matter to the business, such as leads, not only reach or likes. Example: Ran a 6-week campaign that added 3,200 followers and 410 leads.
- Email automation (Klaviyo, Mailchimp): Automated flows turn existing customers into repeat revenue. Name the platform and quote the share of revenue or the repeat rate the programme drove. Example: Built a repeat-buyer email programme that brought 22% of online revenue.
- SEO and content marketing: Organic growth is slow, so recruiters look for a plan held over months and a traffic or lead figure that rose because of it. Example: Grew organic sessions by 60% in 1 year with a 4-post-a-month plan.
- Influencer marketing: Creator work only counts when it is tracked. Say how many partnerships you ran and how you measured sales, such as codes or links. Example: Ran 40 creator partnerships a year with tracked codes and ₹3 lakh average monthly sales.
Analytics and teams skills for a marketing manager resume
- GA4 and Looker Studio: O*NET flags Google Analytics and Google Looker as hot technologies for marketing managers. A dashboard leaders use every week is better proof than a tool name. Example: Built 1 dashboard tracking revenue by channel for the founders every week.
- CRM (HubSpot, Salesforce): HubSpot and Salesforce both appear in O*NET's technology list for this job. Describe something you set up in the CRM and who relied on it. Example: Set up HubSpot lead scoring with 5 rules used by a 6-person sales team.
- Agency and vendor management: Most marketing teams buy some work in. Show you managed scope, quality and cost, ideally with a saving or an improvement at renewal. Example: Managed 2 agencies and cut agency fees by 12% at renewal.
- Leading a team: O*NET lists directing hiring, training and performance reviews of marketing staff. Give your team size, how you run it and one thing the team delivered. Example: Lead a marketing team of 4 with weekly reviews.
Which marketing manager skills to lead with, by experience
Entry level: As a marketing executive or coordinator, lead with the channels you run day to day and the tools you use: ad platforms, email software, analytics, a CRM. Give output and results for each, such as campaigns launched or leads generated. Show research or reporting you did for your manager, since that is the bridge to planning work.
Experienced: As a manager or head of marketing, lead with strategy and ownership: the budget you control, the positioning or pricing decisions you made, and the revenue or share they moved. Then show leadership: team size, agencies managed, how you work with sales. Keep channel tools to one line, because senior hiring is about judgement, not button clicks.
Certifications for a marketing manager resume

- Google Ads and Analytics certifications; Meta Certified Marketing Science.

What to leave off a marketing manager resume
- Vanity numbers with no business link, such as impressions or followers alone. Pair them with leads or sales, or drop them.
- Every social platform that exists. List the ones you ran with results.
- "Results-driven" and "growth mindset". The numbers in your bullets do that job.
- Certificates that expired or that you took years ago for a tool you no longer use. Keep current ones only.

FAQ
Marketing Manager skills questions, answered.
Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.
What skills should a marketing manager put on a resume?
Campaign planning and budgeting, brand positioning and market research first, then the channels you run (paid search, paid social, email, SEO, influencer), then analytics, CRM, agency management and team leadership. Order them to match the job ad, and tie each to a business result: revenue, leads, cost per lead or retention.
What skills does a marketing executive need?
Hands-on channel skills such as ads, social, email and content, plus reporting, basic research and coordination with sales. Executives are hired to run the work, so show volume and results: campaigns launched, posts published, leads passed to sales. Add the analytics tool you report from.
What soft skills matter for marketing managers?
BLS lists analytical, communication, creativity, decision-making, interpersonal and organisational skills. On a resume these become a strategy you chose between options, a plan you presented to leadership, a team you led, and a budget you kept on track. Prove each with a number instead of naming it.
How do I show marketing results on a resume?
Give before-and-after numbers with a time frame: revenue, leads, cost per lead, retention, market share or organic traffic. Say what you changed to cause the result. If a number is confidential, use a percentage or a ratio instead of leaving the result out.
What qualifications does a marketing manager need?
BLS says advertising, promotions and marketing managers typically need a bachelor's degree, often in business, marketing or communications, plus work experience in a related field such as sales, market research or public relations. O*NET's survey shows most people in the role say a bachelor's degree is required.
