What does an HR director do?
The job covers workforce planning, hiring strategy for leadership roles, compensation and benefits design, performance and succession, employee relations, labour relations where unions exist, compliance with provincial and federal employment rules, and the HR budget. The page should show headcount, team size, budget and business outcomes such as turnover, cost per hire and succession coverage.
Best resume format for an HR director
- Open with headcount, sites, team size and budget; directors are screened on scale first.
- Show business outcomes: turnover, cost per hire, succession coverage, not HR activities.
- Keep it to two pages; one page is rarely enough at this level.
The section order and what goes in each are on the how to write a resume guide; the resume format guide covers every format by type and country.

What does a director of HR resume need to show?
Headcount, sites, team size and budget, then business outcomes: turnover, cost per hire, succession coverage and compliance record. Show decisions you owned, such as a pay redesign or a merger integration, and avoid listing HR tasks without results.
How do I move from HR manager to HR director on my resume?
Show scale growth and business impact: more employees, more sites, a larger budget, and results the CEO cared about. Add leadership hiring, succession work and board or executive reporting, and keep operational tasks to one line each.
How long should an HR director's resume be?
Two pages. Put a short summary with headcount, budget and your three biggest outcomes on the first half page. Older roles can shrink to one line each, and awards and courses can be cut to the ones that match the job.
