What does an ICU nurse do?
An ICU nurse resume should show your unit type, patient ratio, equipment and license. In the US most registered nurses work in hospitals, and they usually work in shifts for round-the-clock coverage, which may include nights, weekends and holidays.
ICU Nurse duties to put on a resume
- Assess patients' conditions and monitor them closely, with hourly or more frequent checks.
- Administer medicines and treatments, and watch for patients' reactions.
- Operate and monitor medical equipment used in intensive care.
- Document assessment results, interventions, medications and patient responses.
- Coordinate patient care with physicians and the care team, and carry out care plans.
- Educate patients and families about conditions and how to manage health after treatment, and give advice and emotional support.
- Set up care plans and update them as the patient's condition changes.
Best resume format for an ICU nurse
- Put your license and state near the top, then unit type and bed count, such as 24-bed cardiac surgical ICU.
- Show your patient ratio, equipment and results such as infection rates, response times and nurses precepted.
- Keep it to one page for staff roles; managers can use two. Never include patient names or identifiers.
The section order and what goes in each are on the how to write a resume guide; the resume format guide covers every format by type and country.
