Legal Assistant Resume Examples & Format
A legal assistant supports lawyers by preparing and tracking the paperwork of cases and deals, and legal assistant resume examples should show that work: drafting letters, pleadings, affidavits and agreements from templates, filing documents and following cases on court e-filing systems, maintaining the matter calendar, organizing exhibits and discovery, arranging notarization and filing deadlines, and keeping client files in order. A legal assistant resume should prove skills such as legal drafting from templates, matter calendar and deadline tracking, and court e-filing with numbers from your own work. What does a legal assistant do?
Legal assistants work in law firms, corporate legal departments, courts, government offices and nonprofits, and a legal assistant is not a lawyer, so the page should show matters handled, filings made and systems you use.
Best resume format for a legal assistant
- State the number of matters or documents you handle, since law firms scan for volume.
- Name the courts, e-filing systems and research tools you use.
- Keep it to one page; two pages for senior leads.
The section order and what goes in each are on the how to write a resume guide; the resume format guide covers every format by type and country.

What goes in a legal assistant job description for a resume?
Write duties as results: matters supported, filings prepared a week, deadlines held, documents drafted from templates and the systems you use, such as Westlaw and e-filing portals. Keep any legal judgment with the lawyer and describe your part as preparation, tracking and review support.
How long should a legal assistant's resume run?
One page for most applicants, and up to two pages for senior leads with team supervision and many court filings. Put matters handled, filings and deadline results on the first page, and shorten older roles to one line each.
Is a legal assistant the same as a paralegal?
The titles overlap, and law firms use them differently. A paralegal often has formal training or certification and does more substantive support, while a legal assistant leans toward clerical and scheduling work. Use the title in the post, and list the training and tasks you actually did.
