Dear Hiring Manager,
I am applying for the Legal Assistant position at Joshi and Dave Legal in Ahmedabad. I completed my three-year LLB at Veer Narmad South Gujarat University this year, and I spent three months interning in an advocate's chambers in Surat that handles civil and cheque-bounce matters.
During the internship I drafted forty legal notices and fifteen affidavits using the chambers' templates, and every one was checked by the senior advocate before it went out. I kept a case diary of seventy matters on the e-Courts portal; when I found that eleven hearing dates had changed in a single week and were not updated, I added a weekly sheet comparing the portal with our diary so that nothing is missed. I also prepared eight case briefs with citations from SCC Online.
Your firm's recovery work for banks interests me because it is document-heavy, which suits my attention to names, dates and amounts. I type forty-five words a minute and work comfortably in Word and Excel.
I can join immediately and would welcome a drafting test.
Sincerely,
Felix Barlow

Dear Hiring Manager,
I would like to apply for the Senior Legal Assistant role at Kapoor Legal Chambers. I have five years in a Delhi law firm, where I support four advocates on about 180 live civil and commercial matters in the High Court and district courts.
The part of the job I take most seriously is the hearing diary. Two years ago a missed date led to an ex parte order against a client, and the firm spent months setting it aside. I rebuilt our diary so every matter has the next date, the court, the advocate, the documents due and a reminder five days ahead, and I check it against the court website every morning. We have had no missed hearing dates in twenty-four months.
I prepare e-filing sets, court fees and certified-copy applications, and I draft first versions of around twenty-five agreements a quarter for advocates to review, using a clause library I helped to build. I also handle stamp paper and registration for commercial leases.
Your commercial litigation practice needs reliable support in paperwork and deadlines, and that is my strength. My notice period is thirty days.
Sincerely,
Xavier Barlow

How to open the letter
Name the job, where you saw it and your strongest fact in the first two lines. Two openings that work:
- I track 180 live matters in a diary with no missed hearing dates in two years, and I am applying for your Legal Assistant role.
- As a law graduate who drafted forty legal notices and tracked seventy cases during a litigation internship, I would like to apply for your Legal Assistant position.
What to write in the body
One or two paragraphs that prove you can do the job the advert describes. For a legal assistant, the body should also:
- State volumes: matters, documents drafted, filings a week.
- Say which courts, tribunals and research tools you have worked with.
How to close the letter
Close with your availability, notice period and willingness to take a drafting or proofreading test. Law firms are cautious about confidentiality, so state that you do not discuss client matters, and offer to share a redacted sample of a notice or diary format on request.
Writing it with no experience
- Use an internship, moot court or legal-aid camp with counts of documents and cases.
- Show a sample notice or affidavit you drafted with names removed.
- Offer to take a drafting and proofreading test.
Mistakes to avoid
- Claiming to argue matters when you assisted.
- Typing errors or inconsistent names in the letter.
- Writing about love for justice without naming a task you did.
How do I write a legal assistant cover letter?
Name the role, describe your drafting and case-tracking volume, give one example of preventing an error and say why this firm's work suits you.
What should a legal assistant cover letter with no experience say?
Law degree, internship numbers, research and typing skills and willingness to take a test.
Should a legal assistant mention client names?
No; keep client matters confidential.
How long should the letter be?
About 200 to 250 words.
