Dear Hiring Manager,
I am applying for the position of Associate, Corporate and Commercial, at Mehta Rao & Associates, which I saw on Lawctopus. I graduated with a B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) from a National Law University this year with a CGPA of 7.6, and I have spent four internships learning how transactional and litigation work actually happens.
At Bhardwaj & Partners in New Delhi I drafted 12 commercial agreements, reviewed 30 NDAs against the firm's playbook and researched five points of law for a matter before the Delhi High Court. In a senior advocate's chambers I prepared case briefs and learnt how a judge reads a synopsis: the first page decides everything.
My paper on consent under India's data protection law was published in a peer-reviewed student journal, and I am comfortable with SCC Online and Manupatra. I draft carefully, check every defined term, and would rather send a clean draft late in the evening than a rushed one early.
I will be enrolled with the Bar Council by August and can join from then. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Olivia Greer

Dear Hiring Manager,
I would like to apply for the position of Senior Associate, Dispute Resolution, at Bhosale Iyer Legal. I am an advocate enrolled with the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa, with four years of practice in commercial litigation and arbitration before the Bombay High Court and arbitral tribunals.
At Kothari & Menon Advocates I handle more than 60 active commercial matters. I have drafted pleadings, affidavits and written submissions in over 90 cases and secured interim relief in 11, including two urgent injunctions obtained within a day of instruction. For one client I ran a series of cheque-dishonour and recovery proceedings that recovered ₹4.2 crore.
Before that I was a junior associate in a chambers practice, where I appeared on routine dates and learnt the court's registry and listing practice by heart, which still saves my clients time.
Your firm's arbitration practice is growing, and I would bring both drafting depth and courtroom experience. My notice period is one month.
Sincerely,
Daniel Okafor
Copy either letter, then change every detail to your own: the company, the job title, your numbers. Pair it with a matching lawyer resume and the skills lawyer job adverts ask for. The layout, header and greeting are the same for every job: see how to write a cover letter.

Lawyer cover letter introduction
Name the job, where you saw it and your strongest fact in the first two lines. Two openings that work:
- I have drafted pleadings in 90+ commercial matters and secured interim relief in 11 before the Bombay High Court; I am applying for your Senior Associate, Dispute Resolution position.
- As an NLU graduate who drafted 12 commercial agreements and reviewed 30 NDAs during my internships, I would like to apply for your Corporate and Commercial Associate position.
What to write in the body
One or two paragraphs that prove you can do the job the advert describes. For a lawyer, the body should also:
- Give numbers: matters handled, documents drafted, reliefs secured, transactions closed, values.
- Mention research tools and any publications, and your Bar Council enrolment.
How to close a lawyer cover letter
Close with your enrolment status and date, the practice area you want to grow in at their firm, and your notice period. Law firms read for precision, so keep the close short and error-free.
Lawyer cover letter with no experience
- List internships with the firm or chamber type and the drafting and research you did, with counts.
- Mention moots, publications and legal aid work.
- Say when you will be enrolled with the Bar Council.
Lawyer cover letter mistakes to avoid
- Naming clients or confidential matters.
- Long, ornate sentences; lawyers are hired for clear writing.
- Leaving out enrolment status and practice area.
How do I write a cover letter as a law graduate?
Give your degree and university, internships with drafting and research counts, moots or publications, the practice area you want, and your enrolment date.
What should an experienced lawyer highlight?
Practice area and forums, matters handled, documents drafted, results such as reliefs or recoveries, and enrolment details.
How do I write a cover letter for a law firm internship?
Give your year and university, past internships, research or moot work, the dates you are available and why that firm's practice interests you.
Is the UK law cover letter format different?
The structure is the same; UK firms often ask why their firm and why commercial law in detail, and use British spelling.
