What does a lawyer do?
BLS says lawyers advise and represent clients in criminal or civil proceedings and other legal matters, research and analyze legal issues, and prepare and file legal documents such as lawsuits, contracts and wills. In the US most lawyers work in offices and full time, and BLS notes the work may be stressful, such as during trials or when meeting deadlines. A lawyer resume should state your practice area, the matters or deals you handled with counts, your law degree and the jurisdictions where you are admitted.
Lawyer duties to put on a resume
- Advise and represent clients in civil or criminal proceedings and other legal matters.
- Research and analyze legal issues for each matter.
- Prepare and file legal documents such as lawsuits, contracts and wills.
- Draft and review agreements and advise clients on their rights and risks.
- Manage deadlines, filings and the case calendar.
- Meet and communicate with clients, opposing counsel and courts.
Lawyer resume format and template
- Use a formal, one-column layout in a serif or plain font; law firms read resumes closely.
- State practice areas and forums (state court, federal court, arbitration) in the summary.
- Give matter counts and deal values without naming clients.
The section order and what goes in each are on the how to write a resume guide; the resume format guide covers every format by type and country.

Education and certifications
- BLS says most states and jurisdictions require lawyers to earn a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school after four years of undergraduate study. List the law school, degree and year.
- BLS says prospective lawyers take a licensing exam called the bar exam, and those who receive a license are admitted to the bar. List each jurisdiction and year; if results are pending, say so.

Where can I find a lawyer resume example?
The three samples above are a lawyer resume example for a recent graduate, a 4-year associate and an 11-year senior associate. Copy the structure, not the words: practice area first, then matters and outcomes with numbers. If you want resume examples lawyer hiring partners respect, keep every line to a verb and a count.
How do I write an entry-level lawyer resume?
Lead with your law school, honors, internships with work done (drafts, research, hearings), moots and papers, and skills like drafting and legal research. If you are waiting on the bar exam, say so, as BLS notes the bar exam leads to admission to the bar.
Is there an example lawyer resume for a career changer?
Use the entry-level sample as the pattern: lead with your J.D. and bar status, then any legal internships, then transferable work such as compliance, contracts or research with numbers. An example lawyer resume for a career changer should show drafting and research first.
Is a lawyer CV template different from a US lawyer resume?
In the UK the same document is called a CV, so a lawyer CV template follows the same pattern as the samples here: practice area, matters with counts, qualifications and admission. Check the firm's guidance for length and keep the figures specific.
Should I list client names?
No. Use descriptions like "a regional bank" so you keep client confidentiality.
