LVN Resume Sample & Format for Nurses

A licensed vocational nurse (LVN) gives basic nursing care under the direction of registered nurses and physicians, and an LVN resume should lead with your license, your state and your setting. An LVN resume should prove skills such as medication administration, vital signs and assessment, and wound care and dressing changes with numbers from your own work. Below are three samples, entry-level to senior, with summaries, bullets and skills.

What does an LVN do?

California and Texas use the title LVN for the license that other states call licensed practical nurse (LPN); the work and the national exam are the same, and only the name differs. LVNs check vital signs, give medications and injections as the state allows, change dressings, collect samples, chart care and help patients with daily needs in nursing homes, clinics, home health, rehabilitation and hospitals (BLS). Because the license is the entry ticket, show it first, then the unit types, patient loads and skills that make you ready for the shift.

LVN duties to put on a resume

  • Take vital signs, record intake and output, and report changes to the registered nurse or physician.
  • Give medications and injections within the scope your state allows.
  • Change dressings, care for wounds and collect specimens.
  • Chart care in the electronic record and update care plans.
  • Help patients with eating, hygiene and mobility, and teach them and their families.

LVN resume format and template

  • Put your license, state and board in the first two lines, above the summary.
  • Name the setting and patient load for each job: beds on the wing, residents per shift, home visits a day.
  • Mention tasks that your state allows LVNs to do and that you do often, such as IV therapy or wound care, in the skills section.
  • A resume for an LPN applying in a state that uses the title LVN can show both names, for example LPN/LVN.

The section order and what goes in each are on the how to write a resume guide; the resume format guide covers every format by type and country.

FAQ

LVN resume questions, answered.

Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.

Is an LVN resume the same as an LPN resume?

They are the same license under two names. California and Texas say licensed vocational nurse; most other states say licensed practical nurse. Use the title your state uses, and write LPN/LVN if you are applying across state lines.

What should a new graduate LVN put at the top of a resume?

Your license and state, with the NCLEX-PN result, then a summary with clinical hours and the settings you trained in. Add any nurse aide or caregiving work, and list BLS. If you are waiting for your license, write the exam date.

How do I list IV therapy certification on an LVN resume?

Put it under License and certifications with the issuing state and the year, for example IV Therapy and Blood Withdrawal Certification, California, 2022. Then show IV work in a job bullet, such as the number of IV antibiotics given a shift.
