What does a nursing student do?
Nursing students split their week between classroom courses, a skills lab and supervised clinical rotations on hospital units and in community settings. Because you have not yet taken the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN), the page should show what you can do today: the program you are in, the rotations you have completed and the hours in each, the skills you have practiced under supervision and any certification you already hold, such as Basic Life Support (BLS). Where you have a graduation date, say so, and say that you plan to sit the NCLEX-RN afterward; never write that you are licensed before you are.
Nursing Student duties to put on a resume
- Take and record vital signs, and report changes to the nurse or clinical instructor.
- Give medications, injections and treatments only under the supervision your program and state allow.
- Help patients with hygiene, mobility, feeding and comfort.
- Write nursing care plans and complete clinical paperwork on time.
- Document in the electronic health record with the access your school provides.
- Follow infection control, privacy and patient safety rules on every unit.
Nursing Student resume format and template
- Put education first while you are in school, then clinical rotations, then work and volunteer experience, then certifications.
- Describe each rotation by unit type, hours and what you did under supervision, such as vital signs for four patients a shift. Never claim a task you did not perform yourself.
- Keep a nursing student resume template to one page with plain headings so it reads cleanly in an applicant tracking system.
- Use a nursing student resume with no experience to lead with rotations, simulation lab work, volunteering and any CNA or caregiving job.
The section order and what goes in each are on the how to write a resume guide; the resume format guide covers every format by type and country.

- Say plainly that you will sit the NCLEX-RN after graduation. Do not write RN after your name until the state board has licensed you.
- List certifications you already hold with the issuer and year: Certified Nursing Assistant, Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers, or others. Some programs ask students to hold BLS before the first rotation.

FAQ
Nursing Student resume questions, answered.
Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.
How do I write a resume for a nursing student with no work experience?
Lead with your program, expected graduation date and GPA if it is strong, then give each clinical rotation its own entry with the unit, hours and tasks done under supervision. Add simulation lab work, volunteering, caregiving and certifications such as Basic Life Support.
Should I put the NCLEX-RN on a nursing student resume?
Yes, as a plan. Write that you intend to take the NCLEX-RN after graduating, with the month if you have one. Do not list it as passed or write RN after your name until the state board of nursing has granted your license.
Do I list my clinical hours on a student nursing resume?
Yes. Give the hours for each rotation and, if you want, a total. The unit type, the hours and the tasks you performed under supervision show a reader how much hands-on practice you have had before licensure.
