Start your pilot resume

What does a pilot do?

Duties include checking the overall condition of the aircraft before and after every flight, communicating with air traffic control, operating and controlling the aircraft along planned routes and during takeoffs and landings, and monitoring engines, fuel consumption and other systems in flight. In the US pilots usually have variable work schedules, and overnight layovers are more common for airline pilots. Hiring managers who read pilot resume examples look for your certificates and ratings, hours by type and your safety record.

Pilot duties to put on a resume

  • Check the overall condition of the aircraft before and after every flight.
  • Communicate with air traffic control over the aircraft's radio system.
  • Operate and control the aircraft along planned routes and during takeoffs and landings.
  • Monitor engines, fuel consumption and other aircraft systems during flight.
  • Brief the crew and keep your logbook and certificates current.

Best resume format for a pilot

  • Put certificates, ratings and medical first, then hours by type exactly as your logbook shows.
  • Show sectors flown, hours on type, check results and your safety record.
  • One page for entry-level and first officers; up to two pages for captains with many types and training roles. Pilots usually have variable work schedules (BLS), so add your base and availability.

The section order and what goes in each are on the how to write a resume guide; the resume format guide covers every format by type and country.

Education and certifications

  • Airline pilots typically need a bachelor's degree in any field, and complete flight training with independent FAA-certified flight instructors or at schools that offer it (BLS).
  • Pilots earn FAA certificates and ratings in order: student pilot, private pilot, instrument rating, commercial pilot, multi-engine rating, and for airline roles the airline transport pilot certificate (BLS). List each one you hold with the year.
  • Applicants must pass the appropriate medical exam (BLS); list the class and expiry date from your certificate. Check the job posting and the FAA for the flight hours a certificate needs.

FAQ

Pilot resume questions, answered.

Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.

How do I write a pilot resume with no airline experience?

Lead with your commercial certificate, instrument and multi-engine ratings, medical and total hours, then flight instruction, training and any aviation degree. BLS says airline pilots typically need a bachelor's degree and FAA certificates earned in order, so list each one.

How many hours should I show on a pilot resume?

Show exactly what your logbook says: total time, pilot in command, hours on type, multi-engine, instrument and night. Never round up. Airlines check hours against your records, so a small honest number is safer than an inflated one.

Should I list my medical on the resume?

Yes. Write the class and expiry date from your medical certificate, because airlines screen on it. BLS says applicants must pass the appropriate medical exam. Do not write full certificate numbers on a resume that will be shared online.

What is the difference between a first officer and a captain resume?

A first officer resume stresses hours on type, check results and growth toward command. A captain resume adds pilot-in-command hours, line training, safety leadership and on-time performance. Lead with the seat you hold and keep your hours exactly as logged.
