What does a plumber do?

Plumbers work for plumbing contractors, builders, hotels, hospitals, facility management companies and homeowners, and many progress from apprentice to journeyman and master plumber through licensed work hours. Hiring contractors scan for the kind of work (new construction, remodel, service or commercial), the license level and the systems you can handle without supervision, so the page should make those three things easy to find.

Best resume format for a plumber

  • Name pipe types, fixtures and systems you work on, and put your license level beside your name or in the summary so the contractor reading it sees your qualification before anything else.
  • Give numbers: homes, rooms, bathrooms, apprenticeship hours, response times.
  • Keep it to one page, in plain type, with a phone number that a foreman can call between jobs.

The section order and what goes in each are on the how to write a resume guide; the resume format guide covers every format by type and country.

FAQ

Plumber resume questions, answered.

Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.

Which skills should a plumber list?

List the pipe types you install, the systems you work on (supply, drain, vent, gas), testing and leak detection, fixture and water heater work, drawing reading and safety. Add a number or result beside the most important ones and match the words in the job post.

Does a maintenance plumber need a different resume?

Yes. A maintenance resume shows response times, preventive checks, equipment you service and savings rather than new installations. Say how many units, rooms or systems you cover, so a facilities manager can see the scale of your work.

How do I list a plumbing license or apprenticeship?

Write the license level (apprentice, journeyman or master), the state and the year, and for an apprenticeship the program, years and hours completed. Put it in the summary or just under your name so a contractor sees it first.

What should a plumbing resume include?

A plumbing resume lists your license level, the work you do (service, new construction, commercial), tools and codes known, and results such as calls a day or projects completed on schedule. Apprentices lead with hours logged and training. Add safety certifications and say if you hold a valid driver's license.
