What does a tutor do?

A tutor resume should show that work: the subjects and grade levels you teach, how you plan sessions and track progress, and the results your students reached. In the US, tutors work in schools, tutoring centers and students' homes, or online, and most work part time. Evening and weekend hours are common, with busier periods during the school year and before standardized test dates.

Tutor duties to put on a resume

  • Provide private instruction to individual students or small groups to improve academic performance or prepare for tests.
  • Review class material with students by discussing text, working through problems and checking assignments.
  • Assess students' progress throughout tutoring sessions and adjust the plan.
  • Teach study skills, note-taking skills and test-taking strategies.
  • Prepare lesson plans and study materials such as handouts and quizzes for each student's goals.
  • Communicate students' progress to students, parents or teachers in written reports, in person, by phone or by email.
  • Maintain confidential records of students' assessment results and progress.
  • Schedule tutoring appointments and travel to students' homes, libraries or schools when needed.

Best resume format for a tutor

  • Open with the subjects and grade levels you teach so a parent or hiring manager finds them at a glance.
  • Show result numbers: grades gained, test score gains, students tutored per week and hours taught.
  • Put your availability near your contact details, since tutors often work evenings and weekends (BLS).

The section order and what goes in each are on the how to write a resume guide; the resume format guide covers every format by type and country.

FAQ

Tutor resume questions, answered.

Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.

What is a good tutor resume example for a college student?

A good tutor resume example for a student leads with the major and subjects tutored, then one experience entry with numbers, such as sessions a week and grade gains. The entry-level sample above does this in one page, with availability at the end.

Do I need a teaching certificate to work as a tutor?

No specific license or certification is required, according to BLS. Some employers prefer tutors with teaching experience or a state-issued teaching certificate or license, so list yours if you hold one.

How do I show results on a tutoring resume?

Use grade gains, test score changes, the number of students who stayed with you across a term, and sessions delivered. For example: raised average ACT math scores by 3 points across 15 students. Tutoring resume examples work best when every result has a number.

Should I put my fees on my resume?

No. Discuss fees after the first meeting; a resume is for skills and results.

What is a good tutoring description for a resume?

A tutoring description for a resume gives the subjects and levels, students per week, hours and results such as grade gains. It should also state your own qualifications and the method you use. Write one or two lines per role with numbers, and say whether it was private, school or an online platform.
