What the official job profile lists for a teacher

O*NET, the US Labor Department's job database, lists the tasks of secondary school teachers in plain terms: teach through lectures, discussions and demonstrations, set and enforce rules for behaviour, adapt methods to different students, prepare and grade tests and assignments, set clear lesson objectives, and guide students with academic problems. Its top skills are active listening, learning strategies, reading comprehension, speaking and critical thinking. Microsoft Office, Google Classroom, Google Drive and Blackboard are among the technologies it names.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics describes high school teachers as subject specialists who plan lessons, assess strengths and weaknesses, grade work, talk to parents about progress and supervise students outside the classroom. It lists communication, patience and resourcefulness as the qualities that matter. For a resume, that means showing the subject and grades you teach, how you plan and assess, and one result from your students.

The example bullets below are illustrative: every figure is made up. Use your own numbers.

Teaching skills for a teacher resume

  • Lesson planning and scheme of work: O*NET lists setting clear lesson objectives and preparing course objectives from curriculum guidelines among a teacher's tasks. Say which grades and subjects you planned for and over how many weeks. Example: Planned 10 weeks of maths and science lessons for Classes 6 to 8.
  • CBSE / ICSE / state board syllabus: Each curriculum has its own content and exams, so principals want to know which one you have taught. For a US school, name the state standards or course you taught to instead. Example: Teach the CBSE English syllabus to 4 sections of Classes 9 to 12.
  • Worksheets and activity-based learning: Hands-on tasks that let students try an idea rather than just hear it. O*NET mentions planning instruction with chances for observation and investigation; one activity and how students responded is enough. Example: Ran 2 science experiments with kitchen materials for Class 7.
  • Remedial and doubt sessions: Extra help for students who are falling behind. O*NET lists adapting teaching methods to different students' needs; a result for the group you helped makes the skill concrete. Example: Tutored 1 section so no student scored below 50 in the board exam.
  • Daily recall questions: Short questions on earlier work at the start of a lesson, so students keep what they learned. Name the routine and how long you kept it going, since consistency is the point. Example: Opened every lesson with 3 recall questions for 10 weeks.

Assessment skills for a teacher resume

  • Formative and summative assessment: Checking learning during a unit and testing it at the end. BLS lists assessing students' abilities and grading their work among the core duties; quick, useful feedback is what heads of department look for. Example: Returned marked practice answers within 3 days for 160 students.
  • Board exam preparation: Getting a class ready for a high-stakes external exam. A change in class averages over several years, with the number of batches, is the result most schools will ask about. Example: Raised Class XII English averages from 71 to 78 over 3 batches.
  • Report card and marks entry (ERP): Recording grades accurately in the school's system each term. Name the system, as a US school may use a student information system or a platform such as Blackboard or Google Classroom. Example: Entered marks for 160 students in the school ERP each term.
  • Rubric-based marking: Marking against fixed criteria so students know what a good answer looks like. Say which rubric you used and for how long, because consistent marking is what parents and moderators question. Example: Marked every practice answer against the CBSE rubric for 3 years.

Classroom and school skills for a teacher resume

  • Classroom management: O*NET lists setting and enforcing rules for behaviour, and BLS includes developing and enforcing classroom rules. Give class sizes and the number of sections so the reader sees the load you manage. Example: Manage classes of about 40 students across 4 sections.
  • Smart board and projector teaching: O*NET notes teachers use computers and audiovisual aids to support lessons. Say how often you teach with them rather than only that the room had one. Example: Taught 30 periods a week with smart-board lessons.
  • Google Classroom and Zoom: Google Classroom and Google Drive appear among O*NET's hot technologies for secondary teachers. Show what you post or run on it and for how many classes. Example: Posted weekly work for 4 sections on Google Classroom.
  • Child-safety and POCSO awareness: Child-protection training with the year you completed it. If you apply outside India, list the safeguarding or child-protection training that school or state asks for instead. Example: Completed 1 school child-safety and POCSO training in 2025.
  • Co-curricular coordination: Running clubs, debates, sports or events outside lessons. BLS includes supervising students outside the classroom, and a named event with its scale shows you take on school-wide work. Example: Coordinate the school's inter-house debate for 4 houses.

Which teacher skills to lead with, by experience

Entry level: Lead with your degree, teaching qualification and student teaching: the subject, the grades, the number of weeks and what you planned and taught. Then show one routine or activity that worked and the digital tools you used. Schools hiring new teachers want proof you can plan a lesson and manage a room, so a short, concrete example beats a long skills list.

Experienced: Lead with your subject, the grades you teach and a result over time, such as a rise in class averages across several batches. Then add the wider school work: class teacher or homeroom duties, parent meetings, mentoring trainee teachers, running a department task or an event. These are the skills that move a teacher toward head of department.

Certifications for a teacher resume

  • B.Ed · university and year; CTET or state TET.
  • Subject master's degree, for PGT posts.
  • CBSE capacity-building or NISHTHA training.

What to leave off a teacher resume

  • "Passionate about teaching" with no classroom example. One lesson routine and its result says more.
  • Student names, photos or marks that could identify a child. Use class averages and group counts.
  • Qualifications or curricula the school does not use, placed at the top. Lead with what the advert names and move the rest lower.
  • Every software tool you have tried. Keep the ones you teach with each week.

FAQ

Teacher skills questions, answered.

Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.

What skills should a teacher put on a resume?

Your subject and the grades you teach first, then lesson planning, the curriculum or board you know, assessment and marking, support for weaker students, classroom management, digital tools, child-safety training and parent communication. Give each a number: classes, students, results or years.

What teaching skills can freshers list?

Use student teaching or teaching practice as your experience. List the grades and subjects you taught, the lessons you planned, the activities you ran, how you assessed students and the digital tools you used. Add one routine you kept up and how the class responded, with numbers where you have them.

What soft skills matter for teachers?

BLS names communication, patience and resourcefulness as important qualities for high school teachers. O*NET's work styles for secondary teachers add perseverance, adaptability, empathy, stress tolerance and self-control. Show them through classroom facts, such as how you supported a struggling group or kept a large class on track.

How do I list teacher qualifications?

Put your degree and teaching qualification first, with years, then any licence or eligibility test the job asks for, then subject and digital teaching courses. Qualification rules differ by country and by state, so use the exact names in the job advert. For US public schools, include the state licence and its subject area.

What qualifications do US high school teachers need?

BLS says public school teachers need a bachelor's degree and a state licence or certification, and many states want a major in the subject taught. Licensing usually includes student teaching, a general teaching test, a subject test and a background check. Alternative routes exist for graduates without education coursework.

What skills are needed to be a teacher?

The skills needed to be a teacher are lesson planning, classroom management, clear explanation, assessment and feedback, communication with parents, and patience and organization. Show them with specifics: class size, subjects, grade gains or a behavior system you ran, not just the list.
