What does a business manager do?

The title covers a wide range: in a dental office it means billing, payroll and vendor accounts; in a company with 50 staff it means budgets, hiring, contracts and reporting to the owner; in a larger group it can mean running a P&L. A business manager resume should say which of these jobs you did, then prove it with budget size, headcount, savings and the systems you ran, and it should match the job post's mix of finance, operations and people management.

Business Manager duties to put on a resume

  • Prepare and track the budget, monthly close and financial reports for the owner or leadership.
  • Run payroll, accounts payable and receivable, and keep the books accurate.
  • Manage vendor and service contracts and negotiate pricing.
  • Recruit, onboard and manage staff, and keep HR records and policies current.
  • Oversee daily operations, scheduling, facilities and compliance.
  • Report results and risks to the owner, partners or board.

Business Manager resume format and template

  • Open with the scope: budget size, headcount, locations and revenue, so the reader knows what you ran.
  • Pick one of the three jobs the title covers, finance and back office, operations and people, or P&L, and lead with the matching proof.
  • Keep it to one page under ten years of experience, and put software such as QuickBooks or an ERP in the skills line.

The section order and what goes in each are on the how to write a resume guide; the resume format guide covers every format by type and country.

FAQ

Business Manager resume questions, answered.

Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.

What does a business manager put on a resume?

Put the scope first: budget, revenue, headcount and locations. Then add the functions you ran, such as payroll, vendor contracts, hiring and reporting, each with a result like days saved, dollars cut or retention. Close with the software and degree behind the work.

How is a business manager resume different from an office manager resume?

A business manager resume centers on money and decisions: budgets, contracts, forecasts and results reported to an owner. An office manager resume centers on running the workplace, with scheduling, supplies and front-desk staff. Many jobs mix the two, so match the job post.

Do I need an MBA to be a business manager?

No. Many business managers have a bachelor's degree in business or accounting, or grew into the role from billing, office or operations work. An MBA helps for multi-site or large-budget roles. List the degree if you hold one, and otherwise show the budgets you have managed.
