Nurse Practitioner Resume Examples & Format
A nurse practitioner (NP) is an advanced practice registered nurse who assesses patients, orders and interprets tests, diagnoses conditions, prescribes medication and manages treatment plans, usually within a population focus such as family, adult-gerontology, pediatric or psychiatric mental health care. A nurse practitioner resume should prove skills such as patient assessment and diagnosis, prescribing and medication management, and ordering and interpreting labs and imaging with numbers from your own work. What does a nurse practitioner do?
NPs work in primary care clinics, hospitals, urgent care, specialty practices, telehealth and schools, and the scope of practice depends on the state. To practice, an NP needs a registered nurse license, a graduate degree, national certification and a state advanced practice license (BLS). Your resume should open with the license and certification line, then show your patient panel, your setting and measurable results such as visits per day, panel size or quality measures.
Nurse Practitioner duties to put on a resume
- Take health histories, perform physical examinations and document findings in the electronic health record.
- Order and interpret laboratory and imaging tests, and diagnose acute and chronic conditions.
- Prescribe medication and treatments within the scope allowed by your state and certification.
- Develop treatment plans with patients, and educate them and their families on managing conditions.
- Refer patients to specialists and coordinate care with physicians, nurses and social workers.
- Track quality measures such as screening rates and follow-up for your patient panel.
Nurse Practitioner resume format and template
- Pick a nurse practitioner resume template that opens with a licensure line: state APRN license, population focus, national certification and DEA registration, in that order.
- Give your setting, panel size or patients per day, and one quality or access result for every job.
- A nurse practitioner CV example for academic or research roles adds publications, grants and teaching; a clinical resume stays at one to two pages.
- As a new graduate, list clinical hours by practicum and carry over your registered nurse experience under its own heading.
The section order and what goes in each are on the how to write a resume guide; the resume format guide covers every format by type and country.

FAQ
Nurse Practitioner resume questions, answered.
Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.
How do I write a nurse practitioner resume as a new graduate?
Lead with your license, your national certification and your population focus, then list each practicum with hours, setting and visits per day. Keep your registered nurse experience under its own heading, because it shows patient care and teamwork you already have.
Should a nurse practitioner list prescribing authority on a resume?
Yes. State your advanced practice license and DEA registration if you hold it, and say whether you practice with full or reduced authority only where it matters to the job. Do not claim authority your state does not grant.
What is the difference between an NP resume and a nurse practitioner CV?
A resume is a one to two page clinical summary built around your license, settings and results. A CV is longer and adds publications, presentations, grants and teaching, which suits academic, research or leadership positions.
