What does a business intelligence analyst do?
O*NET's top tasks for the job are generating standard and custom reports for executives and clients, maintaining BI tools, databases and dashboards, keeping information flowing to users on time, supporting existing reports, analyzing industry trends, and documenting report specifications. In practice that means writing SQL against a data warehouse, modeling data in Power BI, Tableau or Looker, defining metrics with the business, and automating manual spreadsheets. A resume should name the data sources and tools, the dashboards built and who used them, and what changed because of them: hours saved, revenue found, decisions made faster.
Business Intelligence Analyst duties to put on a resume
- Build and maintain reports and dashboards for executives, managers and clients.
- Write SQL and model data from the warehouse for reporting.
- Define metrics and document report requirements with business teams.
- Keep BI tools, data sources and refreshes running and support users.
- Analyze trends and explain what they mean for the business.

Best resume format for a business intelligence analyst
- Name the BI tool, warehouse and data domain in each role.
- Show users served, reports built and the decision or saving each one led to.
- Link a portfolio or public dashboard if you have one.
The section order and what goes in each are on the how to write a resume guide; the resume format guide covers every format by type and country.

FAQ
Business Intelligence Analyst resume questions, answered.
Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.
Which skills should a BI analyst resume list?
SQL first, then a BI tool such as Power BI, Tableau or Looker, a warehouse such as Snowflake or BigQuery, data modeling, and Excel. Python and dbt help. Soft skills are turning vague requests into clear metrics and explaining data to non-technical people.
What is the difference between a BI analyst and a data analyst?
They overlap. A BI analyst usually builds and maintains recurring reports and dashboards and the metric definitions behind them, while a data analyst more often answers one-off questions with deeper analysis. O*NET lists business analyst among BI analyst sample titles, so read each posting.
Do BI analysts need a certification?
No, but a tool certificate can help a new analyst. Microsoft's Power BI Data Analyst Associate requires passing exam PL-300. Real dashboards, SQL samples and business results show the same skills more directly, so lead with those and list the certificate below.
