FAQ

Chef resume questions, answered.

Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.

Should I add a photo, and what goes in a chef CV template?

No for most US restaurants and hotels; a photo of you takes space and adds nothing a hiring chef needs. Put photos of your plating in an online portfolio or social profile instead, and link it from the contact line if the work is recent and your own. A UK CV template for a chef follows the same rule.

What skills should a chef list?

Your cuisine specialty and stations, knife skills, food costing, menu planning, food safety and HACCP, inventory and par levels, and team supervision for senior roles. Back each with a number: covers a night, ticket times, food cost percentage or brigade size.

Do I need a degree to be a chef?

Not always. Many chefs learn on the job or through an apprenticeship, while others take a culinary certificate or associate's degree. Whichever route you took, list it with the year and show progression through stations and titles, which tells a hiring chef more than the credential.

How do executive chef, sous chef and pastry chef resumes differ?

An executive chef resume shows kitchen size, covers, food cost and labor cost, menu development and team size. A resume for sous chef roles shows line management, prep systems and inventory. A pastry chef resume shows the program, items and production volume. An example of a chef resume works at one page with numbers on each.
