What does a pastor do?
O*NET groups pastors with other clergy, whose top tasks are praying and promoting spirituality, preparing and delivering sermons, reading from sacred texts, organizing and leading services, instructing people who want to join the faith, and teaching or writing on religious questions. In a church that also means visiting the sick, officiating weddings and funerals, counseling members, leading staff and volunteers, and working with a board or elders on budget and facilities. Beyond calling and doctrine, a pastor resume should give evidence: attendance and membership, ministries started, people trained, giving and the size of the staff and budget you led.
Pastor duties to put on a resume
- Prepare and preach sermons and lead regular worship services.
- Teach classes and Bible studies, and instruct people joining the church.
- Provide pastoral care: hospital and home visits, counseling and crisis support.
- Officiate weddings, funerals, baptisms and communion.
- Lead staff and volunteers, and work with the board or elders on budget and facilities.
- Represent the church in the community and with partner organizations.
Best resume format for a pastor
- Use a "Ministry experience" heading and give church size for each role.
- Show measurable fruit: attendance, groups, people trained, care visits, budget.
- Keep a statement of faith and sermon links as separate documents rather than inside the resume.
The section order and what goes in each are on the how to write a resume guide; the resume format guide covers every format by type and country.

What is a good pastor resume objective statement?
One or two sentences naming the position, your strongest ministry result and the kind of church you want to serve. For a first role: "Seminary graduate who grew a youth group from 25 to 60 students, seeking a youth pastor position focused on discipleship."
How do I write a resume for youth pastor positions?
Lead with youth ministry numbers: students reached weekly, volunteers recruited and trained, trips and camps led, and how you work with parents. Add your education and any safe-ministry or child-protection training your church requires. Keep it to one or two pages.
What does a senior pastor resume sample show that others do not?
Organizational leadership: staff size, budget, board or elder relations, building or capital campaigns, church plants and attendance trends over years. Preaching still matters, so link a few sermons, and also show proof you can run the church: staff, budget and attendance over years.
Do pastors need a seminary degree?
It depends on the denomination. O*NET's survey of clergy shows 48% saying a master's degree is required, usually a Master of Divinity. Some churches ordain without one. Ordination rules come from the denomination or church, so state yours exactly.
