Veterinarian Resume Examples & Format

Veterinarians "care for the health of animals and work to protect public health", in the Bureau of Labor Statistics' words: they examine animals, treat wounds, perform surgery, vaccinate, run x-rays and other equipment, prescribe medication, advise owners and, when needed, euthanize. A veterinarian resume should prove skills such as physical examination and diagnosis, soft tissue surgery, and anesthesia and pain management with numbers from your own work. Below are three samples, entry-level to senior, with summaries, bullets and skills.

FAQ

Veterinarian resume questions, answered.

Still unsure? Send us a message — a real person replies.

What veterinarian skills should I list?

Physical exams and diagnosis, soft tissue surgery, anesthesia, dentistry, radiography and ultrasound, emergency care and preventive medicine, plus the practice software you use. Soft skills that matter are client communication, compassion and calm decisions. Put proof in your bullets.

How do I write a resume for veterinarian jobs as a new graduate?

Lead with your DVM, NAVLE result and license status, then externships with practice type, caseload and procedures, such as supervised spays and neuters. Add any veterinary assistant or technician work from before school. Keep it to one page.

What license does a veterinarian need?

A state license. Every US and Canadian jurisdiction requires the NAVLE, administered by the International Council for Veterinary Assessment, and most states add their own exam on local law. Prescribing controlled drugs also needs DEA registration.

What changes in a veterinary technician or veterinary assistant resume?

A veterinary technician resume leads with your credential and state status, then clinical skills such as anesthesia monitoring, dental cleanings and lab work, with caseload numbers. A veterinary assistant resume shows restraint, kennel care, client communication and clinic software. For a resume for veterinary technician jobs, add the species you handled.
