What does a filmmaker do?
Most filmmakers work project to project, mixing their own films with paid work as a director, producer, cinematographer or editor, so the career looks more like a list of credits than a list of jobs. A filmmaker resume therefore leads with a link to your reel, then credits with your role, the format and length of each film, where it screened or ran, and the crew and budget you managed. Keep the credits that match the work you want next.
Filmmaker duties to put on a resume
- Develop story ideas, write treatments and scripts, and pitch projects to clients, funders or producers.
- Plan shoots with shot lists, schedules, locations, permits and crew.
- Direct actors or interview subjects and guide the camera, sound and lighting teams.
- Edit footage, or supervise an editor, and finish color, sound and graphics.
- Manage the budget, contracts, insurance and rights clearances.
- Deliver the final film in the formats a client, broadcaster, festival or platform requires.
Filmmaker resume format and template
- Start from a clean filmmaker resume template with a link to your reel at the top, and cap the reel at 90 seconds to 2 minutes of your best work.
- A film resume format lists credits as role, title, format and length, year and one line of scale: budget, crew size or where it screened.
- Show credits in order of how well they match the next job, not by date alone, and cut anything that is not your work.
The section order and what goes in each are on the how to write a resume guide; the resume format guide covers every format by type and country.

Education and certifications
- BLS says producers and directors typically need a bachelor's degree, often in film or a related field, and work experience in a related occupation such as assistant (BLS). Name your degree, school and year, or the sets and productions that stand in for it.
- Awards, festival selections and grants are part of a filmmaker's education record: list the name, the year and your role in the film, and never a festival you were only submitted to.
- A drone license such as the FAA Part 107 remote pilot certificate matters if you shoot aerials; name it with the year, and add safety or union training only if you hold it.

How do I list film credits on a filmmaker resume?
Use one line per credit: your role, the title in quotes, the format and running time, the year and one detail of scale, such as budget, crew size or where it screened. Group credits by type, and place the ones closest to the target job first.
Does a filmmaker resume need a reel?
Yes, include a link at the top. The reel carries the creative proof, and the resume carries the facts behind it: your role, the scale of the production, and results like festival selections or client delivery. Keep the reel short and lead with your strongest shots.
What if I have no paid film jobs yet?
List student and independent films as credits with your role and scale, then add production assistant, volunteer or crew work. Show finished films, festival or online screenings and the crews you led. A completed short with clear numbers beats a long list of unfinished projects.
